Indiana Jones Meets Han Solo...
April 27th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

The cross-over you never thought was possible has finally been made.  In the current issue of Star Wars Tales (Issue #19) there's a terrific Indiana Jones/Star Wars cross-over where Indiana Jones finally meets Han Solo.  The story is very  clever, it's short but very well done.  It's a great plot idea and it's got a great twist at the end.  I don't want to give anything away while the comic is still in stores, so run out and pick up a copy of it, it's definitely worth it!

Special thanks to Canyon for the info and the scan!

Young Indiana Jones DVDs in '05 or '06?
April 26th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

We've received a tip from someone (who will remain anonyms) with connections and it seems that George Lucas is planning a list of films to be released on HD-DVD (High Definition DVD) and included on that list, our source tells us, is the Young Indiana Jones series.

The word from the inside that the complete collection of Young Indy films will be released on HD-DVD some time in 2005 or 2006.  Sources tell us that the entire series will be released in one huge box set and it'll be something to behold.  This is supposedly reliable information, but stuff can change, so for right now this is pure rumor but it's definitely something to look forward to in the coming years.

Stay tuned for more info!

New Raiders: Adaptation Article
April 26th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Sixosix has a great article about the Raiders remake by three Mississippi kids back in 1982.  They also have a cool illustration along with the article.  Here's an excerpt:

"Chris Strompolos was the Dinosaur of southern Mississippi – a class clown with a propensity for dressing like Superman. His primary love, however, was the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg classic Raiders of the Lost Ark. On the bus one day, Chris bonded with another kid named Eric Zala over a comic book of the movie.

That summer, Strompolos called Zala with an idea: to remake the Harrison Ford classic, shot-for-shot. Strompolos was going to be Indy, with Zala as the villain Toht. Zala, the more disciplined and detail-oriented of the two, would handle direction. Pre-production began in 1982, with a 649-shot description of the of the movie as cobbled together from the comic book, the novelization and their memory, which was aided by an audio-only theater bootleg Zala had taken. Their small arsenal also included Zala's costume design sketches and one pivotal prop – the boulder from the movie's introduction."

Check out Sixosix to read more.  Thanks to Chris Strompolos for the link!

Indiana Jones IV on the Back Burner
April 23rd, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

E! Online posted an article by Sarah Hall featuring a rundown of the Big Three's schedule, and it's not looking good for Indiana Jones IV.  Steven Spielberg has been working on The Terminal along with a film about the 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, plus two other films, The Rivals and The War of the Worlds.  Harrison Ford is signed to star in The Wrong Element.  George Lucas is still finishing up on Star Wars: Episode III.

It would seem that Indiana Jones IV has been forgotten since there haven't been any official announcements in a while and Spielberg nor Lucas have made any comments about it in a while either.  Here's an excerpt from the E! Online article:

"Indiana Jones can hang up his hat and put the whip back in storage because it doesn't look like he's making a return to the big screen any time soon

The Indiana Jones triumvirate of Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas all have other commitments on their rosters that rank above the long anticipated Indy 4.

While the fourth installment in the franchise was initially targeted for release by Paramount on July 4, 2005, the script was sent back for a rewrite after Lucas decided he was displeased with the material. Production is now slated to begin in 2005, with a release date in 2006.

*  *  *

The Indiana Jones postponement may actually be a boon for Lucas, as its original projected release date came just a scant five weeks after the final Star Wars installation is due to hit screens--meaning that the two films could have wound up competing for box office dollars.

Though the title of the latest Indy flick has yet to be unveiled, one thing's for certain: Ford's not getting any younger. Unless they're planning to call it Indiana Jones and the Quest for Trifocals, they better get a move on."

Well, it's not looking good folks, Indiana Jones IV isn't any closer to filming, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.  Though we might not have a finished script, and Indy IV might not be set in stone, that doesn't mean it won't happen.  Don't give up hope yet Indy fans, for as the great Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over till it's over."  Stay tuned...

Spielberg Too Busy for Indiana Jones IV?
April 21st, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Empire Online reported that Steven Spielberg has yet another film added to his slate, so what does this mean for Indiana Jones IV?  Will we ever see Indiana Jones return?  Well, things aren't looking too good, here's the article from Empire:

"If it's true that idle hands do the devil's work then Steven Spielberg must have the most godly mitts in all of Hollywood. The director has just added another film to his already jam-packed slate, an untitled project detailing the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics. Why is that bad, you ask? Well, add that to The Rivals and the Tom Cruise collaboration War of The Worlds, and you have a line-up of three upcoming projects - none of which are Indiana Jones IV.

On the off chance you remain blissfully unaware of historic events, the 1972 Munich massacre saw six Arab terrorists climb the fence surrounding the Olympic village and storm the apartments housing the Israeli contingent, killing two athletes and holding a further nine hostage. The incident concluded with a shootout at Munich airport where all nine hostages, five of the terrorists and one policeman were killed. The tragic events were chronicled in Touching the Void director Kevin MacDonald's Oscar-winning documentary, One Day in September.

Spielberg will direct a script by The Insider and Forrest Gump scribe Eric Roth and sources indicate that Ben Kingsley will re-unite with his Schindler's List director to take a starring role. Spielberg has apparently been flirting with this project for some time, but recently the DreamWorks/Paramount co-venture has been fast-tracked for a June start date, in locations across Europe.

All of which is great, but it does cast uncertainty over when we're likely to see our favourite whip-wielding archaeologist return. Indy IV has so far been slated for a 2006 release but with the 'Berg busy for the foreseeable, all bets would now seem to be off. Keep your fingers, legs and natty Fedoras crossed, people, and maybe Indy will ride again..."

Check out Empire Online for more.  So, that's five possible films on Spielberg's list other than Indiana Jones IV.  What does this mean for Indy IV?  Will we see our favorite swashbuckling adventure on the big screen again?  One can hope.  Granted, Indy IV is not moving into production as we had hoped it would be by now, but it's not over till it's over.  So keep your fingers crossed, and stay tuned.

New Indiana Jones Fan Film in Production!
April 20th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

My good friend, Ken Gawne, a film student from Scotland, has been working on a project for the past 6 months which has consumed a great deal of his life.  The goal is to produce and direct one of the largest Indiana Jones fan films in history...

Here is a letter from Ken to all willing Indiana Jones fans containing all the details about the new Indiana Jones fan film project as well as information on how you can help out:

Working Title: Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Templars
Production Dates: June – September 2004
Estimated Release Date: Late 2004/ Early 2005
Ken's Email: kwagawne@dundee.ac.uk

Hello,

My name is Kenneth Gawne and I live in Scotland in the UK. I am a big Indiana Jones fan.

For the last 6 months or thereabouts, I have been working on a project. In June this year I will begin shooting on an Indiana Jones film in Scotland, UK. In July I will fly out to America where shooting will continue in California, before returning to Scotland where further shooting will take place in August and September. There are also a few other possibilities where shooting may occur but are TBD, these are: Arizona, Mexico, London, Paris, Ireland.

As you can probably guess from the locations alone, this film will be shot on quite a grand scale. It is my intention to make this film as big as good I possibly can. I also intend to distribute it as widely as possible both in the US and the UK and beyond. My local theatre has already promised to screen it and film festivals and theatre in the US are also planned for release.

So far a skeleton cast and crew has been put together and next week I have a further casting session here in Scotland. The majority of props have been purchased or constructed, costumes put together and a script written.

There are a few things that count against me in this project though. The first is the most obvious, and perhaps the most pertinent: finance. Nowadays with the invention of digital media it is possible to produce a film on a shoestring budget, but of course that does still mean that there must be a budget. At this stage all funding has been raised from the pockets of those involved in the project, so understandably money is tight. This has necessitated quite a bit of improvisation both practically and creatively.

A further problem with regard to fund raising are issues of copyright, and while there will always be a risk, it has been decided to make the film non-profit making. This of course eliminates the prospects of funding from government schemes or private organizations whose aim is to make a profit on any capital they invest in a film.

One other thing, which counts against me, is my lack of experience, which I try to make up for with enthusiasm. However this is a very real issue and something I do my best to overcome.

With these things in mind, I turn to you, fellow Indiana Jones fans. It is with fans like you in mind that I am making this film. By your reaction to it will I judge it to be successful or not. I do have a request to ask from you...

We do need help for production on both sides of the water. The most obvious for of help is money and if funding is something you can spare then that’s fantastic (though please not this is a non-profit making film if anticipating a return).

What I am asking for is some help in whatever ways people can lend it if they would be willing to do so. There are things that are required for this film to be completed: props, actors, crew, experience. Some of these things I have and some of them I don’t. Some of them can be improvised and some of them cannot.

Below I have constructed a list of things that are needed, a mixture of the above. Any help is appreciated and if you think you can help in a way, which is not listed here, please let me know, even if it is something as simple as being able to make sandwiches for the crew. I say now though, while all help is appreciated and will of course receive screen credit, the film is not operating to make profits so there is no way to repay any kindness except with a heartfelt thanks. However my hope is that there are those of you out there who would be interested in being involved with this project.

In advance I say thank you to anyone who feels they can contribute in some way to this project, and it goes without saying that anyone who can ship items, etc will of course be paid for postage costs etc.

Here is the list of things, services, etc required for the film:

US: California, July 2004

  • Vintage style army style tent(s)
  • Vintage style camping equipment
  • Vintage looking crates, boxes, etc
  • Vintage jeeps (2) for desert sequence (or 2 vintage vehicles of some description)
  • Whip for swinging on (steel core/cabled?)
  • Indy revolver (as per main site or as close as possible)
  • Indy style Holster
  • Willing actors (roughly between age of 17 - 25)*
  • Willing crew

UK: Scotland, June 2004, August - September 2004

  • DV Camera(s) + Equipment (Dolly tracks, cranes, etc)
  • Camera operators
  • Sound Equipment
  • Sound operators
  • BOIC/Berkshire Chase Spectacles roughly to fit hat size 6 5/8
  • Vintage car(s)
  • Indy style Holster
  • Whip for swinging on (steel core/cabled?)
  • Ammo to fit blank firing Walther PPK cal. 315 (not standard blank firer)
  • A life-size (fibreglass) mock-up of a stone sarcophagus (a bit of a long shot I know)
  • Anything else vintage roughly of the period
  • Willing actors (native or not)
  • Willing crew (specifically make-up but anyone is welcomed)

* The reason for this age is because so far all of the cast are university or high school students so will be between these ages. To have someone significantly younger or older than this age would be inconsistent casting in the context of the film as a whole. This is not meant to cause any offence to anyone.

Also I would like to thank those from the board whom I have also spoken to already and who have agreed to be a part of this project. Your services are very much appreciated and I am completely indebted to you.

Well I hope this has been of interest to some of you at least and hope no one has any problems with my posting it here. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail me at:
kwagawne@dundee.ac.uk. I can also be found and contacted at the Indy Gear site at www.indygear.com/forum under the name of Indiana Ken.

Thank you,
Ken

Filming location photos:

Truly one of the largest fan film undertakings in recent history, and will soon be a sight to behold!  Keep it here for updates on the fan film project that will follow in the coming months.

Big thanks to Ken for the information and photos!

Spielberg Location Scouting in Malta?
April 15th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

An interesting tid-bit this weekend as the Malta Times reported that Steven Spielberg had supposedly been spotted doing some location scouting on the island of Malta while on his trip to Italy this week:

"Hollywood's Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg was spotted in Malta yesterday with sources saying he was looking at the island's potential as a filming location.

Mr Spielberg, on a whirlwind visit to the island, is without any doubt one of the most influential personalities in the history of film, and one of the wealthiest film-makers in the world."

Could it be that he's looking for some good locations for Indiana Jones IV?  One can certainly hope, but as far as what movie he is scouting for; nobody knows.  This is simply rumor at this point, but as always we'll keep you informed.  Stay tuned!

Thanks to Spielbergfilms.com for the tip!

Official Site: Indy's Read-Along Adventures!
April 14th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

IndianaJones.com has a new article about the classic read-along adventure stories of the Indiana Jones films.

"This is the story of Raiders of the Lost Ark. You can read along with me in your book. You will know when it's time to turn the page when you hear the bullwhip crack like this... Let's begin now."

Of course, not all titles had a whip-crack prompting a page turn, but that was sound effect of choice for the Indiana Jones Read-Along Adventure trilogy. As collectibles go, Read-Along Adventures are affordable and relatively easy to find, and offer instant nostalgia to vintage Indy collectors. The simplification of a gritty two-hour PG-movie into a 24-page storybook for kids is made all the more charming by enthusiastic narration and not-quite-dead-on voice actors.

Very nostalgic look back at a child-hood favorite of many Indy fans.  To check out the full article, head on over to IndianaJones.com.  Time to turn the page...

Steven Spielberg to be Honored
April 14th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Steven Spielberg has been insigned by the President of Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi with the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic), a high merit that's very difficult for a non-Italian to receive.  Spielberg appeared on TV the other day with Kate Capshaw, and he is to appear at David di Donatello 2004, the Awards show for Italian movies where he will receive the Special David award.

Here's the translated story from Cinemazone:

"Director Steven Spielberg special guest at the 48th edition of David di Donatello: he will collect the David won in 2003 and he will be nominated Knight by president Ciampi.

The David di Donatello awards, recognition to italian cinema, will be consigned on April 14 in Rome, from the guests of the evening, led by the tough Pippo Baudo, it stands out the presence of director Steven Spielberg. The director of Duel, E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Schindler's List, just to name only a few of his several hits, will be in Rome to collect the Special David won in 2003. Moreover Spielberg will be received in the morning at the Quirinale by the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who during the presentation of the finalist terns will confer on the director from Cincinnati the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic."

We'll let you know if he mentions Indy IV!  Big thanks to Semola Mariott for the news and the translation of the article!

Update:

The show aired last night, but was interrupted by news of the assassination of one of the four Italian hostages in Iraq.  The show then continued and they aired a montage of clips from Spielberg's films, including Raiders.  Then Spielberg came out and received his award that he had won last year, and then gave his opinion on the Iraq war saying it was a choice to go to war, not a necessity and that he hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

He expressed his sympathy to the families of the four Italian hostages and then spoke about his work on a documentary about the 400 Italian survivors of the Holocaust.  Sadly, he did not mention Indy IV nor The Terminal and after his presentation he took his seat with Kate Capshaw and the orchestra played the theme music from his films as an homage to John Williams including: E.T., Schindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark & Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Thanks again to Semola Mariott for the report!
