Indiana Jones: The Collectable Toy-Shop Flop
July 24th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

A fellow Indiana Jones fan from Club Obi-Wan pointed out a very cool article in the July 16th, 2004 edition of The Madison Courier in Indiana.  Back in 1981 when Raiders of the Lost Ark was released, Kenner released a line of Indiana Jones toys.  Sadly, the original Indy toy line didn't do well in toy stores.  They've since become highly sought-after and very collectible toys, raking in some triple-digit figures in online auctions.  Here's the full article from the Madison Courier:

"Toy-shop flop is a collector hit

In 1981, Indiana Jones was a hit at the box office, but the Kenner line of toys based on the adventurous archeologist was a flor at toy shops.

Throughout the 1980s, a host of The Adventures of Indiana Jones action figures languished on retail shelves. Marion Ravenwood (Indy's love interest) was a peg-warmer, marked down to a mere 99 cents in KB toy stores across the nation.

Though few children were attracted to the 3-3/4 inch figures, the past decade has seen collectors embrace the 11 characters, five vehicles, and assorted accessories.

With a DVD release in 2003 of Raiders of the Lost Ark and a new movie slated for 2005 , these figures are "commanding mucho dinero," said Mark Bellomo, action-figure columnist for Toy Shop magazine.

One of those 99-cent Marions recently brought $740 in an online auction, outpacing Indiana Jones, whose top price in the past few weeks was $560. Belloq, the charming evil adversary in the film, was not far behind Indy at $510.

Even those with bit parts in the film command attention among collectors. A figure of the Arabian steed that carried Indy in pursuit of a Nazi convoy sells for well over $200 when in Very Good condition."

The article also included a picture of Indy, Marion and Belloq on cards.

It's very cool to see how valuable a line of action figures can become after just 20 some years.  While the Indiana Jones toy line didn't fare as well as the uber-successful Star Wars toys have, Indy still holds a special place in the hearts of collectors and fans alike.

Big thanks to COW forum member, Patrick for the article!

The Story of the Canceled Fate of Atlantis Sequel
July 24th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

MixnMojo has posted an interesting story about the failed attempt to create a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.  It turns out the game was in development around the time of 1993 1995, LucasArts was developing a game called, Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix.  The plot was centered around post-World War II Nazis and their attempt to find the resurrect Adolf Hitler using the Philosophers' Stone.

Here is a list of reasons why the game was canceled from MixnMojo:

LucasArts was supposed to do the game in conjunction with a Canadian company. This company apparently wasn't very skilled at programming or creating art, which damaged the project.

Aric Wilmunder, normally a programmer who worked with the SCUMM engine, was one of the project leaders, but he later dropped out. Wilmunder helped write the story, along with Bill Stoneham (another project leader), Joe Pinney, and Hal Barwood (the man responsible for Fate of Atlantis).

Anson Jew was the lead character animator; his character designs were stylized in an Art Deco manner, similar to the 1990's Batman animated TV series. However, Bill Stoneham (who was also the lead artist) was making the game's background art in a realistic style, and the two methods clashed.

Some team members, including Stoneham, disdained the Art Deco animation style, and wanted to use live-action video in Iron Phoenix instead. So the company shot test footage to see if the idea would work. Given that FMV tends to be rather cheesy, it probably didn't, especially because Harrison Ford wasn't involved.

The final blow came when company president Jack Sorensen learned from LEC distributors in Germany that the game could not be sold there. German censorship laws prohibited the sale of any toys (including PC games) which explicitly showed Nazis. Earlier Indy games got away with being sold there by removing all swastikas and all references to Hitler. But since resurrected Nazi soldiers were an integral part of Iron Phoenix's story, it would have to be banned outright instead of being censored and sold.

Since the game was canceled, Iron Phoenix was instead made into a four-part comic adaptation series published by Dark Horse comics.  Sounds like it could have been an excellent sequel, and it's a shame it wasn't made.  Hopefully we will see a new Indiana Jones game soon enough since rumors have been brewing lately, but no official word from LucasArts yet.  Only time will tell.  Head on over to MixnMojo to read the full article about Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix.

Big thanks to Peter for the news!

New Indiana Jones 12" Photos
July 23rd, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Figures.com has posted new photos of the Disney Exclusive Indiana Jones 12".  The figure appeared at the San Diego Comic Con 2004.  The display features both the Caucasian and African-American versions of the new Indiana Jones figure.  We can also see that Indy has a gun and holster, and the sarcophagus comes with a mummy inside of it.

You'll also notice that the scar on Indy's face is on his right cheek rather than his chin (as with Ford).  This would lead me to believe that the figure is more of a G.I. Joe with Indy gear, rather than an Indiana Jones figure, but we'll leave that for you to decide.

I should also point out that the price is listed as $29.99, ten dollars less than the original estimated price of $40.  To see these and more photos, check out Figures.com.

Thanks to 'Rockhammer' for the news.

Birth Date Correction for the Late Pat Roach
July 21st, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Last Sunday we reported that Indy trilogy actor, Pat Roach passed away at the age of 67.  We were later informed that his age was incorrect, for his birth date was listed on IMDB.com as being 1943.  I have just been informed that his birth year was indeed 1937 as it was originally reported on BBC NEWS.  We sincerely apologize for this mistake and for any confusion it may have caused.

Once again, Pat Roach, the only actor other than Harrison Ford to appear in all three Indiana Jones films passed away at the age of 67 last Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer.  He will be missed dearly.

A big thanks goes to Peter Balaz from The Light of Indiana Jones, Marcel from IndainaJones.de and IMDB.com for clearing this up.

M. Night's Attempt to Write Indy IV
July 21st, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

AICN has posted a report of the In Director's Chair interview with M. Night Shyamalan that was broadcast to 41 regal cinemas around the US.  During the interview, M. Night talked about writing, and that's when the Indiana Jones IV script came up.  Here's the summary from Ain't It Cool News:

"[M. Night] Mentioned that when he was attempting to write Indy 4 for Spielberg that he kept having too introspective of an angle on the theme of heroism and what it meant. Spielberg said if you want to continue you can, but Night was getting busy with Signs."

So did Night's work with Signs prevent him from writing the screenplay for Indiana Jones IV?  Well, without a direct quote from Night it's kind of hard to tell.  Nonetheless, it's an interesting tid-bit worth noting, and it certainly gives you an idea of what might have been.  I would like to have seen M. Night's Indy IV script.  I think he could have pulled it off an amazing job and if he had written it, there's no doubt it would have been an excellent film, but it might not have had the same feel as the other three films.

Thanks to Ryan for the tip!

More on Marshall's Indy IV Comments
July 19th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Not a major update, but I thought I'd point out that Sci Fi Wire has posted more quotes from Indy Trilogy producer Frank Marshall about the status of Indiana Jones IV.  These are the same comments Marshall gave to reporters while promoting The Bourne Supremacy (check out our previous story.) "I'd say we have about two-thirds of a great story, and now we're working on the last third," said Marshall about the Indy IV script.

Let's recap real quick.  George Lucas along with another mystery writer are currently penning a new Indiana Jones IV script that, according to Marshall, is two-thirds of the way finished.  So we have the first two acts finished except for the final (and probably the most important) act, which they are hopefully working on as we speak.  Everyone seems to be on board to do the film, it's just a matter of getting the script finished and getting everyone's schedule ready.  Marshall stated that it would be a year or so before things started happening as far as production, so expect to see a bunch of script updates/rumors between now and the summer of 2005.

I contacted Lucasfilm to see if they had anything to add and as far as they are concerned Indy IV's status has not changed.  Indiana Jones IV is indeed still alive!  We'll keep you up to date on the status of Indy IV, so keep it here for the latest.

Pat Roach Passes Away at Age 67
July 17th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

I have just received some very sad news.  According to BBC NEWS, Pat Roach died this morning after a long battle with cancer at the age of 67.  Pat Roach played the role of 'Bomber' in the popular television series Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Many fans will recall that Pat Roach was the only actor other actor aside from Harrison Ford to appear in all three Indiana Jones films playing a total of four classic villains in the series.  Indy fans were looking forward to seeing Pat Roach return in the fourth Indiana Jones films, but sadly that will not happen.

A statement from the family was released today stating, "This is to confirm the news that Pat Roach passed away at 1.20am today, Saturday 17 July, 2004, after a long struggle with cancer,"  Our prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Roach's family.  Very sad news indeed.  The obituary for Pat Roach can be found at BBC NEWS.

Thanks to Carsten for letting us know.

Frank Marshall: Indiana Jones 4 is Still Alive!
July 10th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

While promoting The Bourne Supremacy, Indiana Jones Trilogy producer Frank Marshall spoke to a group of journalists on the current status of Indiana Jones 4.  He stated that despite all the past rumors, Marshall says that project is still alive.  He also confirms that George Lucas and an unnamed writer are working on the script.  Here's the story from IGN Filmforce:

"Indiana Jones IV is still in the writing stages; it's still a live project and Mr. Lucas is working on the script at this time," he told a group of journalists gathered at a press event for The Bourne Supremacy.

When asked if this meant Lucas was penning the screenplay by himself, Marshall replied, "No. There is a writer on the project... I won't go there."

Online rumors that Pirates of the Caribbean scribe Stuart Beattie is working on a draft have persisted. The previous draft, penned by Frank Darabont, was subsequently rejected by George Lucas. He apparently felt that the character-driven story needed a faster pace. Insert sarcastic comments about the script quality of Lucas's own Star Wars prequels here.

So, just when can we expect more movement on Indy IV? "Well I think that, obviously, we don't want to do this movie unless it's going to be great," Marshall says. "There's only the downside of it if we perceive it as something we all don't feel is worthy. Now we're working on that last third. We'll all get our schedules together again but it's not gonna be for another year or so."

Finally, things are starting to look good for Indiana Jones 4 again!  It was starting to look as though Indy 4 had been abandoned but now that we have word from someone close to the project, especially Mr. Marshall.  While we're not out of the woods yet, things are definitely starting to look better.  Stay tuned to TIE.c for the latest!

The Wrong Element Has a Director
July 7th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Variety reported Mark Pellington (Mothman Prophecies) has signed to direct the new Harrison Ford suspense flick, The Wrong Element.  While the story is promising, I'd be a lot happier if Harrison Ford was getting ready to film Indiana Jones 4.

So with Harrison Ford working on The Wrong Element and with Steven Spielberg working on a half a dozen other films, Indy 4 doesn't seem to be the big thing in Hollywood.  Though this news doesn't change anything, if George Lucas (or some other writer) could come up with a draft for Indiana Jones 4, I have a feeling Ford and Spielberg would definitely make time or at least one can hope...

Nevertheless, don't give up hope on Indy 4.  I mean nobody has cancelled the project, and from what little we've heard from Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones 4 is still going to happen!  So have faith, and stay tuned to TIE.c, we'll keep you updated!

Indiana Jones 12" Disney Figure Available
July 6th, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

Rockhammer chimes in with an update on the new Disney Exclusive 12" Indiana Jones figure.  We have confirmation from someone who attended the G.I. Joe convention in Florida that the new 12" Indy figure is now available but only at the Disney Indiana Jones attractions, such as the Stunt Spectacular and at Once Upon A Toy stores at the Disney theme parks.  Here's a quick overview of the new 12" Indiana Jones figure:

  • The retail price for the figure is around $40.
  • The figure comes with a whip torch, snake, jewels and a sarcophagus.
  • The head is just a regular 12" G.I. Joe head and does not resemble Harrison Ford.
  • And most surprisingly, the figure comes as a Caucasian and an African-American.  As of now, there's no confirmation if an Asian or Hispanic figure will be also available.

I've also gotten a report about the figure's gear, and the fact is, this Indiana Jones has a lot of obvious screen inaccuracies.  For starters, Indy doesn't come with a revolver nor a holster and his satchel is long and narrow, very inaccurate.  Not to mention that his jacket has "Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular" written across the back.  While this isn't a major draw-back, it's not what a lot of fans will be looking for.  If you're looking for a well done Indiana Jones collectible, this doesn't appear to be it.

The sad truth is, most fans will find this as a major disappointment.  As far as "Disney Exclusives" go this seems to be the biggest let-down yet.  The whip, the snake and the torch make sense, but the sarcophagus and jewels seem a little out of place.  I've talked to several fans who have seen the figure up close, and the consensus is: save your money.  But as always, we'll let you make that decision.

Thanks to 'Rockhammer' and 'IndyBlues' for the information.

Alfred Molina's Trouble With Spiders
July 2nd, 2004 | Posted by Aaron

As the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 opens this week, Alfred Molina (who plays Doc Ock, the star villain of the film) looks back at his earlier film role, one that we all remember very well, the man who betrayed Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark - Satipo!  CNN has an article about Alfred Molina's latest work on Spidey 2 and how it wasn't is first run in with an 8-legged adversary:

Before uttering that famous film fib "Throw me the idol, I'll throw you the whip"- Satipo stands petrified in the cobweb-lined passageway as Jones calmly brushes scores of eight-legged creepy-crawlies from the guide's back and shoulders.

"There were live spiders, real snakes ... That'd all be CGI (computer-generated images) now," he recalled, scratching nostalgically at a bushy beard he has grown for the role of Tevye in the current Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof."

As Doctor Octopus, he gets his revenge on webslingers by unmercifully pummeling the hero in "Spider-Man 2" with the four metal tentacles grafted onto his body during a botched science experiment.

Ah yes, those were the days, when all that stood between you and certain death was a piece of glass.  Head on over to CNN to read more about Alfred Molina's trouble with spiders.

Spielberg Directing WotW Before Indy 4?

While Steven Spielberg is planning to make a new film adaptation of War of the Worlds, a website has popped up on the net that has taken some fans by surprise.  The website, www.waroftheworldsthemovie.com currently has a photograph that appears to be from the film and has the date "2005" below it.   No word on if this is the official site, but my Spidey, errr, Indy senses tell me it's a fake.  I looked up the registration information for the domain and it doesn't appear to be registered to any major studio that you would expect Spielberg to be affiliated with.

For now, I'd say it's just a hoax.  But the question remains, is Spielberg directing War of the Worlds before Indiana Jones 4?  It's anyone's guess but there's yet to be an official filming date set for either Indy 4 or WotW, so it's all up in the air at this point, nothing official here.  Though interestingly enough, both films are listed on IMDB.com for a 2006 release date, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.  Stay tuned for more information...
