Sound Designer Ben Burtt Leaves Lucasfilm
May 31st, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

It looks as though a veteran Indiana Jones crew member won't be sticking around for Indy 4.  After nearly thirty years of work for Lucasfilm, Oscar-Winning sound designer Ben Burtt is calling it quits and has decided to move on to Pixar.  Syracuse.com posted the following:

"The Syracuse native, who has been sound designer on all six 'Star Wars' films, refers to it as his "tour of duty." Almost fresh out of film school with a couple of assignments with low-budget, high-profile filmmakers Roger Corman and Russ Meyer, he was plucked by Lucas for the original 'Star Wars.'"

"It is over now and Burtt, who has won four Oscars for sound effects editing and creature and robot voice creation, is moving on. He is joining Pixar Animation. It is, he says, time for a fresh wind to blow."

Burtt was quoted by Syracuse.com saying, "The last few years have been frustrating, so I was at a point of change. But I had no official plan."

Ben Burtt was the sound designer on all three Indiana Jones films, served as editor on four chapters in the Chronicles Young Indiana Jones and directed Young Indiana Jones and the Attack of the Hawkmen.  Burtt's most recent work with George Lucas was as editor and sound designer on Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.  Burtt has received four Oscars over the years for his sound design, one for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and a Special Achievement Award at the 1982 Academy Awards for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Spielberg & Lucas Approve Indy 4 Script!
May 29th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Coming Soon! is reporting on a story from Variety that Jeff Nathanson's Indiana Jones 4 script draft has been approved by both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas!  All that Paramount is waiting on now is for Harrison Ford to give the script his approval.  Here's the story as reported on Coming Soon.net:

"Meanwhile, Nathanson's draft for Indiana Jones 4 has apparently met with the approval of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. But before Paramount can move forward, Harrison Ford still has to sign off on the script, and he hasn't yet read it.

Scheduling Indiana Jones 4 for a 2006 start will be tricky for Spielberg, who next heads to Europe to shoot his untitled drama about the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics for Universal and DreamWorks, and is expected to follow in January with a DreamWorks film about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, to star Liam Neeson."

Thrilling news!  Who would have thought the day would come when we would be reporting that George Lucas has APPROVED the Indiana Jones 4 script?  Well, that day has come my friends.  Indy 4 is looking more and more promising with every passing day.  But now, we await Mr. Ford's approval, which shouldn't be hard to get let's hope.  Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest!

Many thanks to Sean for the news!

Screen Used Bullwhip to be Auctioned!
May 28th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

An actual bullwhip used on screen by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is to be auctioned off at Christie's in New York this June.  The whip was originally sold in 2001 but the winning bidder never collected the whip.  The date for the auction is June 16th, 20May and the estimated price for the whip is $8,000 $12,000 (that's US dollars).  Here are some further details from Christie's:

Lot Description:

"Harrison Ford/Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, 1984 A hand-made bull-whip of kangaroo hide with 156in. (3.96m.) long lash, signed in black felt pen by Harrison Ford- used by Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the 1984 Lucasfilm production Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom; accompanied by a note on Harrison Ford headed stationery stating This whip was used by me, as Indiana Jones in "The Temple Of Doom", Harrison Ford, 1.28.May 4¼x6¼in. (10.8x15.9cm.); accompanied by a corresponding black and white still (printed later)- 10x8in. (25.4x20.3cm.) (3)"

Lot Notes:

"This lot was originally sold in a charity auction Icons And Legends on behalf of Friends In Deed. The sale was held at Christie's on 10th September, 2001 and owing to the turn of events the following day in New York City, the lot was never collected by the purchaser."

Note that the card shown with the whip in the photograph above reads: "This whip was used by me, as Indiana Jones in "The Temple of Doom" and is signed by Harrison Ford.  The lot is to be sold to the Friends In Deed organization that provides emotional support to people who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.

Wish I had about ten grand right now!  Very impressive lot to say the least.  I it will be interesting to see how it turns out and who buys the whip.  Visit Christies.com to learn more.

BIG thanks to Eddie for the news!

G4TV Gets a First Look at the New Indy Game!
May 25th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

IGN.com has posted a new video from G4TV featuring previews of LucasArts' next-gen games including the next Indiana Jones game!  The video included an interview with Peter Hirschmann, VP of Development at LucasArts, who talked about the next Indy game, revealing that LucasArts has been secretly working on the game for almost a year.  Hirschmann explained that early on, the LucasArts development team focused on who Indy is as a person and what he would do in the world (reaffirming the quotes from Jim Ward in LucasArts' E3 press release we saw last week).

The video also included a cool walkthrough of some of the levels in the new Indy game, including locations such as Istanbul and China.  While the video quality is not the best, you can certainly tell that this is going to be an impressive Indy game to say the least.  Here are some screenshots of the new Indy game from the G4TV video:

This has the makings of an incredible Indiana Jones game for sure.  LucasArts' dedication to making this a game about the Indiana Jones we know and love from the movies is going to prove to be a major leap forward.  You can visit IGN.com to view the full video.  Stay tuned to TIE.c for the latest!

Thanks to Karen and Otto for the news, and a big thanks to Eddie for the screenshots!

More Indy 4 Script Talk From Lucas
May 23rd, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Chicago Sun-Times posted an article by Cindy Pearlman, about the latest box officer numbers on Star Wars: Episode III.  Included in the article is a quote from George Lucas reiterating what he has said in the past, "I just got the script last week,"  Lucas also confirmed that the Indy 4 script has more work to be done yet, "I'm working with a writer this month, and we still have a little bit more work on the script to go before we start shooting."

While Lucas hasn't really said anything new here, his comments this time around seem more optimistic.  Hopefully this script tweaking won't take too long, but the overriding good news is, Indiana Jones 4 is moving forward!  It's only a matter of time...  Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest!

Raiders of the Lost Ark Screening in New York
May 19th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

The George Eastman House in Rochester, New York will be hosting a special screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark on May 21st at 8:00 PM in the Dryden Theatre.  Artist Deborah Nadoolman will be in attendance to present Raiders, and will also be available after the show for a Q&A session to discuss the art of costume design!  As you may recall, Nadoolman was the costume designer on Raiders of the Lost Ark.  You can learn more about her work from the Making of Raiders documentary on the Indiana Jones 4th Disc in the Indiana Jones DVD Collection.  She is also the president of the Costume Designers Guild, Local 892.

"Film images and icons have changed popular culture forever. When a character is recognized instantly simply by its shadow, such as Chaplin‘s Tramp or Indiana Jones, it has reached iconic status. And it‘s the costume that has altered the contours of the actor‘s silhouette. When a film captures the public‘s imagination, the costumes can ignite worldwide fashion trends and influence global culture. Still, costume designers are often asked the innocent question, 'Where did you get it?' Our answer is, 'We designed it.'"

It is fitting that Nadoolman would be on hand for talking about costume design.  After all, it is because of her skill and talent that we have the iconic, unforgettable and often copied Indiana Jones costume we have today.  Tickets are $6 for the general public, $5 for students, and $4 for museum members.  Visit Eastman House.org to learn more about the screening.

New Indy Game Will Have Tie-ins with Indiana Jones 4!
May 19th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Yesterday, 1UP.com posted a revealing article about the next-generation Indiana Jones video game, which gives us an idea as to what we can expect.  The gaming website reported that the new Indy game will have tie-ins with the fourth Indiana Jones film.  Locations will include San Francisco, China, Berlin and Istanbul.  As for the new villain?  Nazis.  Who else?  And most exciting of all, it looks as though LucasArts is going to create a game that feels more like an Indiana Jones film than any of the previous titles.  Here's the full article from 1UP.com:

"LucasArts today revealed that Indiana Jones will make his return to videogame consoles in 2007. Under development internally by LucasArts, the game will be on next generation hardware.

This entirely original story shares a relationship with the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie much like that between Star Wars Episodes I-III and IV-VI. While the movies have moved forward in time to accommodate Harrison Ford's maturation, the game has no such constraints. It will take place in the prime of Indy's career: the roaring thirties.

Although it won't be a prologue per se, you can expect story seeds that tie to the new film. Those will include cinematics from the new film to help flesh out the plotlines. Jones definitely will be earning his trademark frequent flier miles. Starting in San Francisco, the adventure takes him from the Changsha province of China to Istanbul, Turkey. And of course the Nazi's are involved so Berlin is on his tour itinerary.

George Lucas gave the team its starting direction- he's said that he doesn't think that there's been a character better suited to videogames. Already under development for nine months, most of that time accordingly has been devoted to getting inside Indiana Jones as a character. Lucas is adamant about getting to the heart of what is true to Indy and being sure to not do anything that doesn't fit with that goal.

An example of the lengths the company is going to get things right is the thought process going into how the whip gets handled in the game. In the movies, Indy doesn't use the whip thousands of times. It's a signature tool he uses to pull himself out of particularly tough situations in spectacular fashion. Plan on seeing it used the same way in the game. You won't be whipping through environments like some sort of Castlevania game.

This is the Indiana Jones we saw in the movies, not some Super Hero. He's the exploring professor who often winds up getting the crap beaten of him while somehow managing to get out of the most outrageous situations. It feels like LucasArts has direction, and we'll be looking forward to seeing the game a little ways down the road to see if it looks like the blockbuster that would bring a smile to our faces."

Very exciting news!  I'm sure a lot of you fans (myself included) can breathe sigh of relief after that last sentence.  Finally, an Indiana Jones game that will feel like an Indiana Jones film!  If LucasArts accomplishes its goal, it looks as though this next game could prove to be one of, if not the greatest Indiana Jones game of all time.

On that note, I'd also like to point out that 1UP.com had a release date of January 15th, 2007 for the new Indy game on Xbox 360, but of course that's subject to change.  We'll keep you updated with the latest on the new Indiana Jones video game, stay tuned!

And be sure to check out 1UP.com for the full article.

Dr. Jones to Uncover the Lost Ark
May 18th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

No, not everyone's favorite fictional archaeologist, this guy's a real-life Indiana Jones.  In a fascinating story from Israel National News.com, an unnamed Kabbalist has granted a blessing to archaeologist Dr. Vendyl Jones who is planning to uncover the Lost Ark of the Covenant.  Dr. Vendyl Jones has devoted much of his life to tracking down the Lost Ark, and now he is just one step away.  Jones stated that his discovery of the Lost Ark will "flip the whole world right-side-up."  Here are some excerpts from the article:

"An unnamed Kabbalist has granted blessing to famed archeologist Dr. Vendyl Jones, to uncover the Holy Ark of the Covenant. Jones plans to excavate the Lost Ark by the Tisha B’Av Fast this summer.

The famed archaeologist, who is the inspiration for the “Indiana Jones” series, has spent most of his life searching for the Ark of the Covenant. The ark was the resting place of the Ten Commandments written by Moshe (Moses) on Mount Sinai, and was hidden just before the destruction of the First Temple.

Now after receiving the blessings of Judaism's top Kabbalists and Rabbis, Jones is excited to uncover his life's pursuit. He believes the ark will be discovered by Tisha B'Av, a day of repeated tragedy in Jewish history, the anniversary of the destruction of both the First and Second Holy Temples."

Well, it looks like the Lost Ark will finally be found after all, and fittingly enough, by the real Dr. Jones himself.  That will make for one hell of a headline won't it?  (For the record, Tisha B'Av is to take place in August of this year.)  And it turns out that Dr. Vendyl Jones was one of the inspirations for Indiana Jones according, to the article...

"Jones' escapades and explorations were the inspiration for the blockbuster movie 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' of the 'Indiana Jones' trilogy. The man who wrote the first draft of the film, Randolph Fillmore, was one of the volunteers who worked with Jones in 1977.

“I agreed to help him write the movie,” Jones said, “as long as – number one – he wouldn’t set it here (In Israel). Some people believe the ark is in Ethiopia or Egypt, some believe its in Constantinople or Rome. I just didn’t want it to be portrayed as being here. The second thing was, 'Don’t use my name.' So he didn’t. My name is Vendyl – V-E-N-D-Y-L. So he just dropped the first and last letters and it ended up Endy Jones.”

Although at the time of the film, Jones was far from pinpointing the location of the Ark, he has come a long way since then."

That certainly adds another chapter to the history of Indiana Jones.  It will be amazing to see if Dr. Jones succeeds, and here's hoping he does!  It's a complicated yet captivating story, and it's most certainly worth a read.  Check out Israel National News.com to read the excusive story.

The Indy Experience.com's resident writer and fan fiction author, Stella Nobrega (a.k.a. Canyon) has written a brief note to all TIE.c visitors to explain her absence over the past few months:

Dear TIE.c Readers,

This is a note to apologise for my lack of articles and fan stories recently on The Indy Experience.com.  Due to personal reasons, I have been finding it increasingly difficult to manage the time or the energy to write, and I still have a lot going on right now.  However, I wanted to let you know that I am still writing for The Indy Experience, and Aaron will be posting an article by me shortly.

I am also in the process of writing my fourth Indiana Jones novel (a sequel to The Ark's Return), which I have almost finished.  I very much look forward to writing once again and I thank you all for your patience.

Kind regards,

Stella (a.k.a. Canyon)

We are all excited to have Canyon back and writing once again.  Expect to see new articles and stories by Stella in the coming weeks and months.  Stay tuned!

George Lucas Confirms Indiana Jones 4!
May 17th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

BBC.co.uk posted a summary of the UK premiere of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith where George Lucas was in attendance.  Lucas was quickly met with chants from the audience, demanding three more Star Wars films, but Lucas assured them that there won't be any more films, "It starts when he is 9 years old and ends when he is dead. There is no more story."  The crowed then began to boo, but Lucas quickly replied with, "I'm working on the next Indiana Jones."  Quite a way to turn around a crowd.  So there you have it.  Once again, confirmation that Indiana Jones 4 is in the works, and from the mouth of George Lucas himself!  Things are definitely looking good folks.

Check out BBC.co.uk for the full report from the UK premiere.

Thanks to Steve for the news!

Raiders Nominated in AFI's 100 Years of Music
May 12th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

The American Film Institute has released their list of 250 nominees for AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores and included in the list are a number of scores by John Williams, many of which are from Steven Spielberg films.  The list includes scores from Jaws, Schindler's List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and of course Raiders of the Lost Ark!

The list will be voted on until only 100 remain.  Chances are the Raiders score should make it until the very end, and it's almost a given that it will be near the top assuming those voting on the scores have any bit of sense.  Once the final 100 on AFI's list have been chosen, 25 scores will be selected to be performed at the Hollywood Bowl on September 23rd.  Should be quite a performance looking at the array nominations.

Check out AFI.com for more information and to view the full list of 250 nominees.

Big thanks to Spielbergfilms for the news!

Lucas: Indy 4 Has "A Ways To Go"
May 9th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

We have yet another quote from George Lucas on the status of Indiana Jones 4 this evening, this time from Static Multimedia.  During their interview with Lucas, they asked about the next Indiana Jones film and Lucas did confirm that he has the new script and that he will be working with the writer (Jeff Nathanson).  "Yep.  I got a script last week and I'm going to work with the writer next week and you know, we have a ways to go on it."

Hopefully this business of Lucas working with Nathanson won't bring about a total rewrite that delays the film even further, but since the story is Lucas' own, a little tweaking is understandable.  Chances are that with all of the Episode III press Lucas has had to deal with these past few weeks, he probably hasn't had much time to read the Indy 4 script in detail.  But Lucas does have a point, we have quite a ways to go until the Indy 4 release date, but what a ride it will be!  On that note, Lucas also commented on the four years he spent working on the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles back in the early 1990s.  "I had a wonderful time on Young Indiana Jones. It was a great series. We did it for four years. I spent those four or five years actually working on it. That's really all I did during those years. It was really a great experience and I love television."

Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest on Indiana Jones 4.

Thanks to Daniel, Lee and Eddie for the news!

Indy 4 Will Have Some Supernatural Elements...
May 2nd, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

In an interview with TIME Magazine, George Lucas spoke about the next Indiana Jones installment where he confirmed that he had just received the new Indy 4 draft yesterday.  He also stated that Spielberg is committed to the film, and that Indiana Jones 4 will have some supernatural elements...

"You know, I said three's fine.  And then I came up with an idea I thought was brilliant, so I told the other guys [Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford], and they kind of flipped out.  It's vaguely in the realm of the supernatural.  We have to accept the fact that Indiana Jones is an older man.  But it's been hell getting a script out of it.  Steven is committed to shooting it next year.  I just got the latest script yesterday."

Our diligence and patience over the years is finally paying off!  You couldn't have asked for a better quote from Lucas.  So far Indy 4 seems to be following the same pattern as the last three films with a story by George Lucas, supernatural elements and of course Spielberg directing with Ford as Indy.  The most encouraging part of Lucas' comment was that he at least got a positive reaction out of Steven and Harrison about the story.  But of course, as it has been for many years, the only thing standing in our way has been that blasted script, and we may have overcome that particular obstacle (again, I emphasize may.)

Could this be the final leap from the lion's head?  Could the grail finally be within reach?  It's looking pretty darn good folks.  Stay tuned to The Indy Experience.com for the latest!

Thanks to Eddie for sending me the quote!
