Assistant Director David Tomblin Has Passed Away
November 29th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

David Tomblin, the man widely regarded as the greatest Assistant Director in the world passed away on August 4th at the age of 74. I apologize for the terribly long delay in reporting this, but this tragic news just came to my attention. In case you don't know, David Tomblin was the Assistant Director for all three Indiana Jones films: First Assistant Director on Raiders of the Lost Ark, Assistant Director on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and First Assistant Director: UK for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. No information has been provided as to the cause of Mr. Tomblin's death, but nevertheless our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Thanks to Jason for letting me know.

Official Site: A Closer Look at Pankot Palace Cuisine
November 24th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Indiana Jones.com has posted a fascinating behind the scenes article about the Pankot Palace cuisine served to Indy and company in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Fearsome Feast: A Closer Look at Pankot Palace Cuisine details the surprising (and at times gruesome) facts behind that of Pankot Palace's menu - a scene that continues to stand out in the minds of every Indy fan. As the article explains, everything from the snake surprise to the chilled monkey brains (Ah, dessert!) has an element of truth to it.

"When Willie politely asked, "Excuse me, sir, do you have something simple, like soup?" it's unlikely that a steaming tureen of eyeball soup was what she had in mind. As strange as this dish may be to Westerners, eyeball soup finds its roots in many different cultures, and is still eaten today.

Caldo de cabeza, or "soup of the head" as it is sometimes called, consists of boiled sheep head parts including eyeballs floating in salty broth, and is often listed on local restaurant menus through Central and South America. Fish eyeball soup is a mainstay starter in China. And closer to home -- Chicago's Maxwell Street Market offers goat eyeball tacos complete with optical nerves still attached."

The article also noted several deleted scenes from the sequence, including the entrée of roasted wild boar complete with roasted baby wild boars and Short Round's monkey friend who flees when dessert is served. All-in-all, the official site has produced another excellent article well worth the read. Check out Indiana Jones.com for the full article!

Williams and the Boston Pops to Perform in Vegas
November 15th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

John Williams, the man behind the music of such films as Saving Private Ryan, Star Wars and of course the Indiana Jones trilogy, will be performing with the Boston Pops in Las Vegas in 2006. The concert is to benefit The Samaritan's Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to developing innovative drugs for children. The John Williams concert will be at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas on March 24th, 2006. This is an excellent opportunity to hear the master of cinema music himself live in concert. No Emperor's Tomb for Xbox 360?
November 15th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Yesterday, we reported that PlanetXbox360.com had posted a list of Xbox games that wouldn't be backwards compatible on Xbox 360. Included on their list was Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb and I assumed that Emperor's Tomb would not be playable on Xbox 360. However, I was pemature in this assumption. Turns out that the list posted by Planet Xbox 360 was based on assumptions. Microsoft released a list of Xbox games that would be backwards compatible, and Planet Xbox 360 assumed that all other games would not be backwards compatible. But the list is not complete. Things can still change so there is still a chance that Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb for Xbox will be playable on the new Xbox 360. We'll keep you updated on any further updates.

Thanks to Sean and Eddie for the news and the corrections.

Jim Ward Talks Briefly About Next-Gen Indy Game
November 14th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Mlive.com posted an article from American Business Daily about the new Xbox 360 and included in the article was some interesting information from LucasArts President Jim Ward. Ward talked about how "LucasArts will benefit from putting out games such as Lucasfilm's "Indiana Jones" franchise six months to a year from now, when more consumers own the new Xbox machines. Ward hopes to coordinate the game's release with a possible Indiana Jones film remake in the summer of 2007."

Makes a lot of sense, since not everyone is going to be getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas. The new Indiana Jones video game is due out sometime in 2007 and Xbox 360 hits shelves on November 22nd (you can catch a sweet Xbox 360 demo in Wal-Mart stores right now - well worth the wait in line).

Thanks to Eddie for the news.

We've got two brand new fan reviews of the ultimate fan film, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation!

  • Review by Pearly - "What's amazing about the film is the absolute attention to detail that's gone into it, and the level of quality that the boys managed to achieve given their extraordinarily limited budget." Read More

Big thanks to Pearly and Stephen for submitting their reviews!

Indiana Jones 4 in 3-D?!
November 11th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Well, here's some interesting news this morning. Development-Hell.com has posted some very intriguing news, which includes a quick summary of a Q&A session Steven Spielberg did at the University of Southern California film school, where he spoke about Jurassic Park IV, a possible remake of Sugarland Express and of course Indiana Jones 4 in 3-D. What?! You heard right, Indy 4 in 3-D, here's the summary:

Not much was said about Indiana Jones IV except that Lucas and Nathanson are locked away writing the script, and that Harrison Ford will be returning. He did casually mention that Lucas wants to simultaneously release Indy IV in 3-D.

Finally, Spielberg said that has not and does not plan to develop a total film emersion technology (he was just as surprised as everyone else that that was a rumor), and said that he believes a barrier must exist between the film audience and the film itself. He also mentioned that he saw tests that were done to convert Casablanca, Top Gun, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Laurel and Hardy into 3-D and said that the industry is going to have to be very careful about what they move to make 3-D; because classic films like Casablanca looked horrible!

Let me just say right away that as a student filmmaker, I am thrilled to hear that the film emersion technology rumor was indeed false. Spielberg has always been an old skool director, which has shown through when he resisted Lucas' push to do Indiana Jones 4 digitally. On the topic of Indy 4 being released in 3-D, well, I'm all for it just as long as we can see it in good old fashioned 2-D. Can't have Indy 4 breaking away from the original trilogy too much. There are enough factors separating the first three films with the fourth installment already.

Smithsonian Magazine Features Spielberg Article
November 10th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Smithsonian Magazine's November 2005 issue features an excellent article entitled "35 Who Made a Difference: Steven Spielberg", an article that looks at Spielberg's work in bringing history to life in his films. The article talked about the historical factors in many of Spielberg's films including Amistad, Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

"His paradoxical willingness to use detachment and reserve almost to the point of withdrawal in order to get the most emotional power out of historical re-creation was first evident throughout an entire movie in the Holocaust-themed Schindler's List, which examined a subject that Spielberg, with personal and emotional ties to the world of Eastern European Jewry, clearly hungered to do justice to."

This is truly an excelent article that I highly recommend you read. To check out the full article, visit www.smithsonianmag.edu.

Temple of Doom on "Best Opening Scene" List
November 10th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

According to a story from the ANI news service, Sky Movies' "Great Beginnings" poll let fans vote for their favorite opening scenes from motion picture history. Star Wars came in first with Jaws in second, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom coming in at third. Another testament that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's contributions to cinema over the years has left a lasting impact. It should also be noted that the top three winners all had musical scores composed by the great John Williams.

Hyperspace Features Vintage Connery Interview
November 4th, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

Star Wars.com's Hyperspace service has posted another vintage Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade interview, this time with Sean Connery. The interview comes from 1989, around the time of the release of Last Crusade. Here's an excerpt:

"The nice thing about Indiana Jones is the humor and the fact that it's back to an older age, not an age of hardware and spacecraft, but cars and airplanes and trains and horses. I'm always looking for the humor in a situation and Harrison Ford has a nice sly sense of humor. I'm very impressed by Steven Spielberg; he's very inventive, very quick. We've built up the humor as much as possible in the relationship between Indiana and his father."

Overall, a very interesting interview and well worth the read. So if you have a Hyperspace membership, be sure to check out the full interview.

Thanks to Eddie for the news!

McCallum: Indy 4 Script Ready Within the Year
November 3rd, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

The Daily Targum featured an interview with Producer Rick McCallum who talked about the live-action Star Wars TV show and gave an update on the Indiana Jones 4 screenplay that George Lucas is currently working on:

And then there's everyone's favorite hat-wearing archaeologist.  "George is finalizing the script on Indiana Jones Part 4," McCallum says, "which should be done within the year."  It's a good thing ILM has experience animating dinosaurs, because if Harrison Ford dies it shouldn't be that hard for "George" to cut him in.

Good to hear George is still at work on the Indy 4 script - and more importantly that it is almost finished, let's just hope he doesn't take too long with his "finalizing".  We'll keep you updated on the latest, stay tuned!

Big thanks to Eddie for the news!

Raiders of the Lost Ark Reff in Chicken Little
November 3rd, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

According to Riverfronttimes.com's review of the film Chicken Little, Disney's newest animated flick features a scene in homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark.  The review describes the scene where the film's characters are fleeing a "large rolling metal object" that just so happens to look like the giant rolling boulder from Raiders.  And while fleeing the giant rolling object, the characters escape into a movie theather that is apparently showing Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Interesting Raiders refference. And you can see it in Disney's new film, Chicken Little, which opens here in the US tomorrow.

Thanks to Eddie for letting me know.

"Expanded" Indiana Jones Soundtracks in 2006!
November 1st, 2005 | Posted by Aaron

TIE.c has gotten word that Silva Screen Records (the record company that released the Indiana Jones trilogy soundtrack selections back in 2003) will be re-releasing the Indiana Jones trilogy soundtracks sometime in 2006 (with no specific release date determined yet).  We received this information from Silva Soundtracks' Marketing/Product Manager, who told us to be on the lookout for a new EXPANDED edition of the Indiana Jones soundtracks, which will include all-new re-recordings of each film's entire score.  While he did not specify, we can deduce from what we do know that this new Indy trilogy soundtracks will include previously unreleased tracks (especially for the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade soundtrack).  Recording for the new release is currently underway, and we'll be sure to keep you up to date on the latest - stay tuned!
